Earlier this morning, before going to rehearsal, I visited the Toccarion here in Baden-Baden — it’s an amazing place where kids can play, study and experiment with music and art, learning to communicate in any possible way. Truly wonderful and inspiring, if you come to Baden-Baden you should definitely visit it, too!
The orchestra and Maestro Hengelbrock ROCK, and when I say rock I really mean it!.
Mozart, Led Zeppelin, Piazzolla and Miles Davis zusammen to rock DON GIOVANNI in Baden Baden, there’s nothing better than listening to music changing when you were already thinking that it could be difficult to make it different one more time… Ah, I LOVE MY JOB!.:-)
It’s been an awesome run this Elisir, really enjoyed singing Dulcamara once again and working with my talented colleagues, Eri, Dimitri, Fabio and Tara, the orchestra and the chorus and *everyone* at Bayerische Staatsoper, and performing for such a welcoming audience.
…tonight at 19:00 I will be at the Münchner Künstlerhaus (Lenbachplatz 8, München) for the Künstlergespräche series of Die Münchner Opernfreunde - an interview/chit-chat moment for anyone who can attend. I hope to see you there. :-)
And, since I’m typing, I’d also like to THANK EVERYONE who was at the Bayerische Staatsoper last night for L’elisir d’amore, it was a blast, and you are an amazing audience! HERZLICHEN DANK!!.
Did you like Dulcamara’s steampunk-ish vehicle? ;-)
I’ve sung several times at Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, that’s why I know all the people working there are extremely dedicated professionals who have a genuine passion for opera. Unfortunately, as things stand right now, their professionalism, their passion, their dedication alone aren’t enough to let Maggio Musicale live on. If Maggio Musicale ended, that would mean losing artistic and cultural heritage, not only for Florence, the place where opera was born, but for the whole world. That would mean depriving the world of something beautiful and alive, ad surrendering to the gradual decline of culture. We must ask, indeed we must demand this heritage isn’t taken away from us all.
Matías Haber is a long time friend of mine, a fellow Uruguayan, and an opera singer with a penchant for tango, too. Together with his girlfriend Andrea Seewald, an Austrian contemporary dancer, he’s started this amazing project: teaching tango to people with Down Syndrome. They started off in Uruguay and have now taken their project to Austria, too. Here is an inspiring and really moving video of what they do.
Earlier this month, mi querido Maestro, Renato Sassola, has passed away.
This is very sad, sad news for me. Il Maestro was the star of Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, where his sweet tenor voice gave life to so many characters.
He wasn’t just a Maestro, he was a friend and a mentor to all his students, including myself, giving us the right advice at the right moment, and I feel so blessed for having had the privilege of studying with him.
He once told me something that made me sad at the time, but I soon understood what he really meant to say: he told me I had to leave South America to really pursuit my dream. I was sad, because I loved his lessons, I loved learning from him and I wanted to go on studying with him forever, but he was right. He said I had to spread my wings and fly.
